MANAGEMENT and trustees of Manor Park sports club have appointed a commercial manager to make the best use of its facilities.

Andy Nicholls has taken up the newly-created post and will act as a contact for any new members or visitors to the centre. He will also oversee future developments to the site.

The club was officially opened in 1907 on ten acres of land leased from Sir Henry and Lady Grey, with facilities for tennis, croquet, hockey, archery and bowls

Nearly a century on, members can still play tennis, bowls and archery, plus squash, table-tennis and pool. Professional coaching is also available.

The club currently has 1,500 members, but Mr Nicholls, a member for 15 years, said: "We are always trying to encourage new members to the club, but often people are unaware of the full range of facilities available. Visitors are welcome to come and try out what is on offer before becoming members.

"We are also keen to attract any schools or organisations who wish to use our facilities."

The centre already boasts four squash courts, two indoor and fifteen outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor bowling green and pavilion and a six-rink indoor bowling hall among its assets.

Recent developments include the addition of acrylic surfaces to the tennis courts, enabling the sport to be played in all weather, and plans are in place to develop the bowling facilities.

Future developments are also centring round the social aspects of the club, with plans under way to transform the main entrance to a conservatory overlooking the tennis courts with seating, a bar and refreshment facilities.
