ALLOW me to set the scene. It's Tuesday, September 30, at 8.45am. I'm stood on the pavement in Geraldine Road trying to cross at a very busy time. I am carrying my 2 year old and holding the hand of my 6 year old very tightly. No road traffic appears to want to stop to let us cross the road.

Then a car draws up level with us and its inhabitants indicate that they wish to mount the pavement where we are stood. When I indicate that I am trying to cross the road they appear wronged and surprised. I get angry with the passenger in the car for expecting us to move so that they can manoeuvre onto the pavement in order to let a bus pass.

I wish to take this opportunity to apologise to the car driver and passenger for my anger. It is, however, an extremely frightening experience trying to cross the road at this time of the day. As pedestrians we are aware of the chaos and the difficulties road users face trying to drive up and down in limited space while making room for bigger vehicles, parked cars etc.

Please, please, please be aware, however, of the pedestrian's vulnerability and think of our safety by using the roads to drive on and leaving the pavements strictly for pedestrians.
