Well done J Harries (Your Letters, October 3) for raising the important subject of animal welfare during transport across the EU, and specifically the Commission proposal which could compel the UK to drop its ban on the export of live horses and donkeys for slaughter abroad. May I assure him that MEPs are already on the case.
My Conservative colleague and West Midlands Agriculture spokesman Andrew Griffiths has been in touch with Commissioner Fischler and left him in no doubt about the strength of our feelings on this issue.
We are working with Compassion in World Farming on this and hope to get full cross-party support for their campaign.
Philip Bushill-Matthews MEP,
European Parliament, Brussels.
