A SUPER fit 61-year-old, who is running 250 miles to raise money for charity, has received a helping hand from his friends in Worcestershire.

Alan Haw, who has been a member of the Tunstall Rotary Club for a decade, is running from his home in Stoke-on-Trent to Plymouth - hoping to arrive on Friday, October 17.

And the carpet upholstery cleaner, who admits he hates running, stayed with the President of the Worcester Wychavon Rotary Club, in Flyford Flavell, on Wednesday night.

"I was contacted by the district treasurer who told me Alan was running to Plymouth, and, of course, I was happy to offer him somewhere to stay," said Mike Sheppard.

"He said the stretch coming over the Cotswolds had been pretty tough but he was up-and-out before 7.30am so he was pretty keen to press on."

Mr Haw is hoping to raise more than £6,000 for WaterAid - a charity that helps people build lasting fresh water supplies.

And the veteran athlete, who is planning to run along the A38, will be staying with other Rotary Club members along the way.
