BLAZING tree waste kept firefighters from throughout Wyre Forest busy for 16 hours on Tuesday.

About 50 firefighters from Kidder-minster, Stourport, Bewdley and Worcester battled the flaming pile of cuttings at Coney Green Farm, Stourport after receiving the call at 12.25am.

The foliage - off the B4194 "switchback" road from Bewdley to Stourport - was fiercely ablaze according to Sub-officer Pete Smith of Kidderminster Fire Station.

About half the 150-metre by 70-metre waste was ablaze, he said, and firefighters fought for an hour to initially contain the inferno.

"There was no immediate water supplies so we had two back-up water carriers which we had to re-fill via pumps in the Astley area," he said.

"There were also what we believed to be gas cylinders and other rubbish with the cuttings."

Crews left the scene at 4.30pm on Tuesday, 16 hours after receiving the original call from worried members of the public.

A police spokeswoman said the fire was not being viewed as suspicious.
