A 77-YEAR-OLD man at the centre of a murder probe into a road death has been given a caution by police.

He had been arrested on suspicion of murder following a smash on the B4194 "switchback" road from Bewdley to Stourport on July 13, but was released without charge.

Betty Wardle, 73, died after her silver Honda Civic collided with a grey Honda Accord Aerodeck travelling in the opposite direction at about 6pm, near to Bewdley Town Football Club.

The man was arrested at the scene and returned to Kidderminster Police Station on Friday to be told the case against him had been dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Police spokeswoman Joanne Hammond said: "The police have gone to the CPS and they have advised us that there is no case. He has been given a caution for assault but there are no other charges."

Mrs Wardle, from Stourbridge, had been seen arguing with a man in the car park of the Woodman pub before the accident.
