PARISH councillors in the Lenches have decided not to object to being switched from the Mid-Worcestershire Constituency to Redditch - a move strongly opposed by the Liberal Democrat group on Wychavon District Council.

Maggie Stroud, clerk to Church Lench Parish Council, said: "We don't mind fighting battles but councillors thought they didn't think they would win this one.

"They were not minded to protest in view of the fact that we had already protested being put with Inkberrow at the time of the Local Government elections, but it didn't make any difference. We would rather have gone with Harvington as we tend to look towards Evesham rather than Redditch."

She said parish councillors understood the Liberal Democrat concern about the political aspects of the move.

Councillor Margaret Rowley, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Wychavon, said: "We were against the proposal for one large two member ward covering Inkberrow, Hanbury and the Lenches as it covers such a large area from Droitwich Spa to the Vale of Evesham.

"The current proposal to put the whole area in the Redditch parliamentary constituency makes even less sense as the area is very rural, whereas Redditch is largely rural."

She explained Liberal Democrats would be asking the Boundary Commission to look at including the entire Inkberrow ward in Mid-Worcestershire while making adjustments between the north Worcestershire constituencies, and asking Wychavon District Council to object so that a full inquiry would be held.

Details of the recommendations are available at the Wychavon shops and at www.statistics.gov.uk/pbc/. Any representations should be sent to the Boundary Commission for England, PO Box 31060, London by October 31.
