JUDO: Samurai Judo Club's dominance of county judo was reflected in 21 medals, including six golds, at the Worcestershire Junior Open Championships.

The Kidderminster club did not even field many of their top players but still got off to a good start in the boys' U-30kg category.

Greg Oertel sliced through opposition from Wolverhampton, Birmingham and Long Eaton to reach the semi-final.

Oertel amassed plenty of points in taking around two minutes to beat his next opponent and face a Kettering boy in the final.

With a spectacular throw, he defeated the same player who knocked out Wesley Connor in the quarter-finals.

Samurai dominated the U-34kg section with Alex Dowling beating silver medalist Andrew Edlin in the final for gold, while Daniel Spivey and Edward Connor took bronzes.

They completed a hat-trick of golds through Robin Woodward in the U-38kg category.

Woodward recorded six straight maximum-point wins, beating a Worcester player in the final.

Michel Edlin and Charles Woodward were unlucky to miss out on the medals in the same section.

Karl Gaughan was edged out of the U-50kg final against a Worcester boy and had to settle for silver.

Despite a virus, Ryan Pitcock returned with a bronze as did the rapidly improving Simon Cooper.

Ben Dowling registered five maximum-point wins for gold in the U-55kg category and Matthew Lowe managed three good wins for a bronze.

In the open weight event, Samurai newcomer Rob Sorrell's two impressive wins catapulted him into the final which he was unlucky to lose against a much heavier player.

Displays of courage and determination saw B Dowling and Pitcock secure bronzes, despite being much lighter than the opposition.

In the girls' U-28kg section, Lottie Millington made the final which she narrowly lost to a Worcester girl.

Amy Oertel won four encounters to take an emphatic U-32kg gold and could have faced Amber Gaughan in the final.

But A Gaughan lost narrowly to a Cheltenham player in the semis before winning two more for a bronze medal.

In the middleweights, Hannah Cooper still gets better with a semi-final victory over a Wolverhampton opponent particularly eye-catching.

H Cooper ended up with silver but there was another gold to come for Samurai through Emma Butler who disposed of everybody in the girls' open.

Katherine Lloyd-Jones and Rachel Wilkinson added bronzes to round off a thrilling day.
