A STOURPORT schoolboy was today handing over some of the "dough" he won in a competition by bread giant Warburtons to Kemp Hospice, where his dying dad received vital help in his last months.

Big-hearted Sam Pagett, 11, wanted to give something back to the charity which cared for his dad John before his death last year from lung cancer.

The youngster, a pupil at Burlish Park Middle School, won the award in Warburton's search for a "rising star" in Wyre Forest who had shown courage in the face of adversity or who had done something special for others.

Sam won the award in the 10-14 age category of the awards, run in association with the Shuttle/Times & News, for his determination to follow in his dad's footsteps and take up the tenor saxophone.

The tenacious schoolboy got to grips with the instrument in the few months after John's death and showed off his new talent when he performed at a special memorial concert.

He was awarded £150 to give to the charity of his choice and some gift vouchers to spend on himself, along with a trophy to display at home.

Proud mum Jill said Sam immediately knew he wanted to support Kemp.

John Fletcher, the hospice's campaign manager, said Sam would do more than just hand over the money during his visit.

"He is going to be staying on and he's going to play his saxophone to the patients.

"And he wants to do other things for Kemp Hospice. When I meet him I'll be discussing what other things he wants to do,"Mr Fletcher added.
