A PERSHORE woman is singing for a place in the final line-up of ITV's Pop Idol and a chance to win a million-pound recording contract.

Tamsin Vaughan, aged 23 was short-listed from 20,000 people to perform live to the nation this Saturday. But her success so far has come as no surprise to friends and family who will be backing the singer every step of the way.

Tamsin's mother Gael Tredwell said: "We are all very excited and nervous - when you see Tamsin on the television the reality of it really hits you. Performing has always been her goal and she has followed it since she was a child."

Friend Shona Mitchell said: "The first time we met was at dance school in Pershore, so ever since I have known Tamsin she was looking for fame - she has always been a little star."

The former Prince Henry's High School pupil plans to dedicate her Saturday-night performance to close friend Shelley Cooper, who died after being hit by a car 10 years ago, aged 16. Shona said: "I think Shelley is always with Tamsin and her attitude towards life is just perfect - she is the most down to earth person I know. But I can't imagine Simon Cowell saying something to her - it is going to be quite surreal to watch."

Tamsin, who plans to impress the judges with her rendition of Bonnie Tyler's hit Holding Out for a Hero, has already had professional success since moving to London four years ago. She has appeared in productions of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story and Taboo.

Shona said: "Even if Pop Idol does not come off Tamsin will still pursue her dream - but if it does come off she will be a happy girl!"
