A MAN accused of taking part in a smash-and-grab raid at a Worcester jewellers told a jury how he was woken up in the night to be offered a valuable wristwatch.

Anthony Moxon was sleeping on a sofa at a friend's flat when he was offered the deal, Worcester Crown Court heard.

He paid £50 for the watch, which was later valued at £750. "Did you think the purchase was legitimate?" asked his counsel, Miss Abigail Nixon.

"I didn't think about it," he replied.

Moxon, aged 26, of Eastbank Drive, Worcester, denies burglary at Dunn's jewellers in Chapel Walk, CrownGate, on Monday, March 31, this year. The jury has heard that another man, Steve Cherry, has already pleaded guilty.

Prosecutor Pardeep Tiwana has alleged that two hooded men carried out the raid. After a tip-off, police recovered much of the £11,000 worth of stolen jewellery from the flat in Nightingale House, Worcester.

Moxon said he slept through the night except for the incident when he bought the watch off a man he didn't know.

When he woke the next day, he was threatened by an unknown woman wielding a knife. She was complaining about her boyfriend being bullied by someone he knew.

Moxon said there was a plate of jewellery on a table together with splinters of glass. He examined it but had not seen it before.

The trial continues.
