REDDITCH police and fire brigade have joined forces with the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to crack down on owners of abandoned and unlicensed vehicles.

Since Monday, the major players have stepped up their enforcement action to rid the town of nuisance vehicles.

The vehicles, they say, are a hazard to road users, look unsightly and are an easy target for arson so the operation is being welcomed by the fire service.

Their removal from the streets will have a direct impact on road safety and the vehicles will meet their fate by being crushed.

Many unlicensed vehicles also have no insurance, no MOT certificates and are committing other road safety offences.

DVLA enforcement manager John Moore said: "We are delighted to be working alongside the police, fire brigade and council to tidy up Redditch.

"The aim is to make the area a centre of excellence for this type of operation and demonstrate what can be achieved in dealing with this ever-increasing environmental problem."
