Worcestershire earned a well-deserved 2-1 victory against visitors Surrey in the FA County Youth Cup first round at Worcester City's St George's Lane ground.

But the match ended on a controversial note as Surrey thought they had snatched a stoppage time equaliser only to find the referee had blown for full-time.

Worcestershire made a flying start when Adrian Hipkins shot home from Oliver Endacott's pass in the second minute and Anthony Smith nearly doubled the lead five minutes later.

After a poor start, Surrey began to gain a toehold in the game but rarely looked dangerous in the last third of the pitch.

On the half hour a mazy run by Endacott set up an excellent chance for Hipkins but he screwed his shot wide, while Surrey created their best chance so far with Black seeing his shot saved by the legs of goalkeeper Niall Hacking.

Worcestershire's overall play deserved a second goal and it almost came in the closing minutes of the half with Tom Hobbs seeing his rasping shot rattle the underside of the crossbar and then Hipkins saw his shot blocked on the goal-line.

Five minutes into the second half the home county made a double substitution, Luke Whittington and Matthew Atkinson replacing Danny Deehan and goalscorer Hipkins.

Within two minutes Worcestershire's long overdue second goal arrived with man of the match Hobbs smashing a spectacular volley past goalkeeper Brewster.

Worcestershire were dominating the second half, creating and spurning numerous chances to put the game beyond Surrey's reach.

Hobbs was again denied by the crossbar, Endacott saw his shot tipped around the post by Brewster and Michael Miller had a shot cleared off the line.

Despite their dominance, Worcestershire were forced to endure a nail biting final 10 minutes when Kirkpatrick headed home unchallenged to halve the deficit and then came that controversial ending to the match.

Worcestershire will now travel to meet Bedfordshire in round two with the tie to be played at Arlesey Town FC on Saturday, October 25.
