BROMSGROVE Rovers stormed into the first round of the FA Trophy following a fine 3-1 victory against Dr Martens Western Division rivals Sutton Coldfield Town.

George Rooney's side will now travel to Weston-super-Mare in the next round on November 1.

Rovers dominated play from the start. Town 'keeper Justin Bray fumbled Mark Benbow's free kick but recovered in time to turn Mark Atkinson's follow up around the post.

Marcus Jackson crossed from the left, Peter Sutton challenged Bray who could only punch the ball away and Benbow fired in the loose ball only to see it cannon off a defender sprawled in the box.

Danny Scheppel headed wide from Grant Beckett's cross before the pressure finally told on 28 minutes. Bray received a back pass from Steve Farmer, but his clearance hit Atkinson's backside and the ball looped up and bounced into the unguarded goal.

Straight from the restart a right wing cross from Jackson saw Sutton's headed attempt go just wide.

On 39 minutes the Greens doubled their advantage, Steve Pope continuing his scoring run when he headed home from a corner.

Sutton rarely troubled Rovers' defence, but right on half time a double save from Rovers 'keeper Paul Wyatt, was needed as Darren Martin's effort was blocked and Simon Tucker's shot saved.

The Royals came out with more conviction in the second half, and within five minutes had halved the deficit. Emeka Ejiofor crossed from the left, Mark Wolsey flicked on and the ball hit the unfortunate Dave Benton to wrong-foot Wyatt.

Sutton had an effort ruled out for offside and Atkinson shot weakly at Bray but on 59 minutes Rovers restored their two-goal lead, Pope netting another penalty following a foul on Jackson by Bray.

Chances to add to the scoring were plentiful. Dean Perrow missed an open goal for the visitors and Bray denied Peter Sutton on a couple of occasions, Richard Gardner and Kevin Jones saw Wyatt save in the Rovers goal.
