LUCTONIANS continued their stunning start to the season with a 27-26 victory at Scunthorpe.

The Midlands One side stay top of the league following their 100 per cent start to the campaign.

Jeremy Wheadon gave them the perfect start on Saturday with an early penalty only for Scunthorpe fly half Gareth Penn to level the scores.

Wheadon was then put in for a nicely worked try and converted his own effort to give the visitors a 10-3 lead. Back came Scunthorpe with two more Penn penalties and the lead was just one point.

Lucs, however, went through the gears and, after a fine midfield break from Darren Brick, winger Andy Garrod cut inside to score a fine try. Wheadon added the extra points to put Lucs back in charge.

The comeback trend continued when, on the stroke of half time, a chip ahead by Scunthorpe centre Ben Sherwood saw Lucs fail to gather the awkward bouncing ball for winger Tom Foster to go over in the corner for a try which Penn converted.

Scunthorpe opened the second half strongly and within five minutes had taken the lead when a slick three quarter movement saw winger Mark Sherwood go over for an unconverted try.

The home side seemed to have put the result beyond doubt in the 65th minute when Sherwood went over for his second try to give them a 26-17 lead.

However, with 10 minutes left, centre Mark Panniers scythed through the middle to score near the posts to give Lucs hope.

That hope was turned into joy in the final minutes when Wheadon went over for his second try and give the visitors what had seemed an unlikely victory.

In Midlands Two (West), Bromsgrove won 20-8 at Aston Old Edwardians but Malvern went down 23-13 at Nuneaton Old Edwardians and Hereford slumped to a 33-0 defeat at Wyeside.

Pershore, meanwhile, recorded one of the results of the weekend when they won 13-5 at Southam in Midlands Three West (South). Steve Holmes bagged two tries in the victory while James Martin added a penalty.
