IRATE residents are up in arms over plans by Worcester nightclubs to extend their opening hours.

They say they are sick and tired of being awoken by "drunken yobs" in the early hours.

Vince Tregus will tonight speak on behalf of Bridge Street residents to try to convince the city council's licensing committee to refuse permission to allow Bamboo nightclub, in Tybridge Street, to extend its Sunday licence to 2am from the current 12.30am.

Mr Tregus said fed-up residents had to deal with loud, rowdy behaviour from people coming over the bridge from the club all week long.

"I got up once at 2.45am to tell people to move away from our house and the next thing we know we had a brick through our window," he said.

"We have witnessed the blokes up on the bridge peeing into the river and throwing bottles around."

Other nightspots in the city applying for extended licences are Tramps, in Angel Place, Le Mango, in Angel Row, and Bushwackers, in Trinity Street.

Sheila Weaver, who lives in Warmstry Court, Quay Street, said the noise from revellers making their way home after attending the various nightclubs was so bad during the summer, she was unable to have her windows open.

"I had to sleep with my windows closed during all that hot weather, which was intolerable," said Mrs Weaver.

"The clubs don't care what affect the extended licensing hours will have on the lives of residents - all they care about is profit."

And Pamela Beresford, warden at Berkeley's Court in The Foregate, which offers sheltered accommodation to the elderly, agreed.

"The situation is appalling," she said.

"The clubs are not bothered about the residents at all. They should all close at the same time, 1am. To extend the licensing hour until 2am will mean they won't actually close the doors until much, much later, which will make the situation even worse. We may as well not bother going to bed at all."

Tramps is applying to extend its Sunday opening hours from the current 12.30am to 2am (4am if the following Monday is a bank holiday).

Le Mango is applying to extend its hours to 2.30am from Monday to Thursday from the current 1.30am and the Sunday opening times to 2am (4am if it is a bank holiday) from the current 12.30am.

Bushwackers has applied to extend its operating hours to 4am on Mondays to Saturdays from the current 2am.

None of the club were available for comment.

The licensing committee will decide on the applications submitted by Tramps and Le Mango this evening.

Bushwackers and Bamboo will have their applications heard on Tuesday, October 14.
