SOUL music fans are being invited to step back in time for a classic evening of floor stompers with a "Northern" groove.

The sounds of Northern Soul will fill the dancefloor at the Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre on Saturday night in homage to the venue which started it all.

Wigan Casino began holding evenings dedicated to the sound of Northern Soul - black music from north America - in 1973 and organiser of Saturday's event Francis Tee, aka Terry Thomas, has helped compile a CD celebrating the era's finest sounds.

Mr Tee - who runs a record shop of the same name in Blackwell Street, Kidderminster - said the evening promises a revival of the halcyon days of the casino but also the Nautical William club, on the Bridgnorth Road.

He said: "It is now a nursing home but in the 1970s was a top venue for people in the West Midlands who loved Northern Soul.

"We run three or four evenings at the Glades every year and they are always well attended. We are attracting people from across the country as well as youngsters, often coming with their parents!"

The night is described as "100 per cent classic Northern Soul" and features original stalwarts of the DJ scene of the 70s - Steve Russell, Basil and Mr Tee.

Mr Tee said: "It's a fabulous room with a round dance floor and has an atmosphere which really gets people on their feet."

The Motown-fanatic has also had a hand in compiling Wigan Casino Soul Club, a compilation of the genre's finest moments, set to hit the shelves in time for Christmas.

Tickets are available from Mr Tee on 01562 515291 and J&H Russell in Coventry Street, Kidderminster on 01562 822686.
