BROADWAY'S annual marital challenge - The Challis Cup - a greensome bogey competition for married couples played off half combined handicaps - proved unusually devoid of domestic crises when members competed in perfect playing conditions.
The card of +9 posted by Mark and Andrea Stedman ensured that a visit to Relate wouldn't be necessary and resulted in them lifting the trophy one point ahead of Cath and Mick Lee.
An equally impressive +5 gave the perennially successful Gisbournes - Joan and Tony - third spot just edging out Lin and Mike Everitt on countback.
In similarly favourable playing conditions, the club's ladies' section staged its Mercia Castle Stableford qualifying competition and excellent cards were returned in all divisions.
The winning score of 40 points posted by Diana Chambers on a countback from Denise Parker will go forward to the county to challenge for the Mercia Castle Trophy.
The eighth LGU Medal of the year also resulted in some outstanding scores but it was Mary George who outshone her rivals as a scintillating net 59 proved to be the round of the day and reduced her handicap from 38 to 32!
Results - LGU Medal (Silver Division): 1 Pauline O'Hagan 77-9-68; 2 Jenny Brotherton 85-14-71; 3 Vicky Watkins 81-9-72. Bronze I: 1 Sue Byrd 98-25-73 (cb); 2 Lorraine Davis 98-25-73 (cb); 3 Deborah Stein 100-27-73. Bronze II: 1 Mary George 97-38-59; 2 Kim Lockyear 97-33-64; 3 Alma Harrison 103-36-67.
