A RAILWAY poster promoting Malvern Hills as a tourist attraction has sold at auction for more than £700.

The 4ft 2ins by 3ft 4ins poster was part of a collection of 200 British and Irish travel posters, which sold for £179,141 at Christie's in London, yesterday.

The poster, which went for £705, was produced by London-born artist Warwick Goble in 1931 for the Great Western Railway.

It is emblazoned with the words "Great Western Railway. The Malverns. In The Golden Heart Of England".

The posters used to be a familiar sight on railway platforms during the steam era and made holiday destinations and beauty spots as enticing and romantic as possible in an age when overseas holidays were beyond the reach of most ordinary people.
