PROMOTED Bewdley finished off a successful Worcestershire League Division Two campaign by taking a two-wicket win over Alvechurch and Hopwood with a ball left.

Several rain interruptions reduced the match to 43 overs each as Alvechurch were asked to bat first.

They put on 60 runs for the first wicket in 15 overs but lost wickets and momentum as the weather intervened.

Simon Mauger bowled a tight nine overs and Jason Taylor (3-42) returned to take crucial wickets.

Bewdley's openers posted 89 runs before Gareth Lewis was caught for 65 and Mike Harris scored steadily for 37.

None of their main batting hopes stayed long as Alvechurch bowled and fielded competitively.

With five overs and four wickets to go, the target was more than a run-a-ball.

But batting strength saw them home with Martin Flack and Robert Combes hitting 14 runs off the last two overs.

Alvechurch & Hopwood 182-7, Bewdley 183-8.

Bewdley seconds raced to a big nine-wicket victory over Alvechurch to finish as champions.

David Jones won the toss and inserted the home team who started well with 42 runs for the first wicket.

Rain reduced the match to 42 overs each and the need to score quickly led to rash shots.

The last six wickets vanished in five overs through spinners Colin Harris (5-32) and Andy James (3-7).

Club chairman Andy Halkon (61 not out) and Matt Cowdrey put on a century stand in the 16th over.

Cowdrey (44) was eventually caught to make the score 108-1 but David Meek (16) hit a few boundaries as Bewdley cruised home in the 21st over.

Alvechurch & Hopwood 127, Bewdley 2nds 128-1.
