DROITWICH Spa RFC First XV got their Midlands Three West (South) season off to a winning start with a solid 17-9 victory at Old Leamingtonians.
Matt Blackmore kicked four penalties and debutant Tom Childs added an unconverted try last Saturday.
Director of rugby Julian Bailey said: "You can't ask for a better start result wise. I didn't think we would lose it after we got our heads in front.
"We were a bit apprehensive to start with but we played reasonably well, there are still a lot of things to work on.
"I thought Nick Godfrey (flanker) played exceptionally well and Tom Childs."
The hosts had the advantage in the opening exchanges, using their heavier pack to drive at Droitwich. Spa looked nervous during this spell, none more so than outside half Blackmore, who spilled his first three passes.
After that though Droitwich began to win lineouts through Tony Way and Phil Horton and took the lead with two well struck Blackmore penalties.
Old Leamingtonians drew level before half time with two penalties of their own.
The second period saw Spa up the tempo with Blackmore adding another penalty before a good run by centre Simon Mountjoy put Childs in for a try.
The hosts hit back with a further penalty, but Spa had the last word as Blackmore, who had a much more assured second half, slotted his fourth penalty.
