BROMSGROVE RFC First XV kicked off their Midlands Two (West) season in convincing style with demolition of old adversaries Hereford at Finstall Park.

Grove sailed over for seven tries last Saturday while restricting Hereford to just three penalties from full back Colin Osbourne.

Coach Dean Ball said: "At the end of the day the result was what we wanted. They seemed to have enjoyed themselves, which is a good sign."

The first of Bromsgrove's tries was scored by Richard Newman. Dave Wellavize kicked the first of three conversions and two penalties.

Shortly after, Wellavize was on hand to score in the corner following a powerful run from winger Richard Trigg.

Bromsgrove's third try was an entirely forward affair. Ross Baxter and Andy Bridge combined in a break from a set scrum and Dave Hurcombe powered over for an unconverted score.

The final try of the first half was a combination of forwards and backs started by an excellent break from scrum half Nick Copson. He shipped the ball to skipper Dave Clark, he fed Carl Bradley, who took the ball to ground, and from a quick ruck, Copson played in Dave Wilkinson to power home.

The majority of the second half was scrappy with both sides struggling to dominate.

Following an early Wellavize penalty Bromsgrove soaked up pressure from the visitors. Sustained Hereford pressure led to several penalties, one of which was kicked.

Bromsgrove scored three more tries, two from Steve Philips. The first was from an excellent lineout ball secured by Tom Churchill followed by a rolling maul and short pass to Philips who ran ten yards to touch down. Copson fed Philips for the second, a powerful 20-yard run. Phillips was injured in the process and left the field.

Trigg scored the best and final try. From a scrum, Bridge created a ruck immediately distributed to fly half Tim Hall. He put Trigg through and his pace took him under the posts.

The Second XV lost 23-15 at Luctonians, the thirds defeated Hereford 31-7.
