Redditch driver Colin Willmott had his best qualifying to date in the Mayflower MG Trophy Championship, with the new MGZR car now sponsored by Willmott Rentals and Edwards of Stratford (MG Rover dealership).

He was competing in MG Car Club meeting at Cadwell in a fully race-prepared MGZR in a field of very close competing MGTF and MGZR Race Cars.

His successful qualifying of 3rd came in a class in a field of 23 MGZR's and MGTF cup cars.

The start was very close with the rear wheel drive MGTF's typically pulling away from the line better than the front wheel drive MGZRs.

Steve Hunter, the eventual race winner and Tony Scarlett had a close race throughout with Tony Scarlett taking the fastest lap in ZR and Mark Roberts in 3rd place taking TF fastest lap.

Willmott had a poor start dropping to 4th place (in class) into the first bend and most of the first lap. By the end of the first lap, close racing with Phil Grinsell's ZR and Colin Willmott made a place up into 3rd place, right behind Barry Benham in 2nd, close racing and contact between Willmott and Benham saw Willmott drop into 4th again, only to regain 3rd place the following lap, before a minor mistake in the 'mountain' section saw Willmott finish eventually in 4th place (in class, 9th overall). In the ZR class - Tony Scarlett 1st, Barry Benham 2nd, Phil Grinsell 3rd and Colin Willmott 4th.
