WORCESTER Rowing Club continued its domination of the West of England Challenge Vase at the club's Autumn Regatta.

The club's open elite coxed four provided both of the finalists in the premier provincial trophy in this category.

The A crew defeated the C squad by one-and-a-half lengths to take the trophy for the seventh time in the last eight years and the 15th time in the event's 111-year history.

The battle for the Vase was the highlight of the regatta, held on the River Severn and which attracted 150 oarsmen and women from 28 different clubs.

Racing was close throughout the day with one re-row after a dead heat.

The host club was the most successful on the day with 13 victories, followed by Stourport Boat Club with nine.

Bewdley Rowing Club had four successes and there was one victory for RGS Worcester.

A planned mixed eights event had to be cancelled due to lack of entries.

It was the club's first major event of the season following the cancellation of the Spring Regatta due to high river levels.

Regatta secretary Keith Tribe said: "It was a successful day.

"We had a lower entry than usual because we had to move the date due to a race meeting, but the day went very well."

The club's next major event is the Small Boats Head Race on Sunday, October 12.
