PLANS to improve the traffic flow on Worcester's southern link road will come under scrutiny tonight.

They will be on display in Whittington Village Hall from 5.30pm and will be discussed at a meeting of Whittington Parish Council from 8pm.

Around 150 people attended a similar exhibition in Powick Parish Hall in July, when the scheme was discussed by Powick Parish Council.

Worcestershire County Council's proposals for the A4440 include improvements to the junctions at the Powick, Ketch and Whittington roundabouts, to reduce congestion at peak periods.

Traffic lights

Traffic lights are proposed at some of the entrances to the roundabouts and routes across them would be more clearly defined.

A detailed traffic model was built to test the suggested improvements, indicating that they will improve traffic conditions, besides making it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to cross at these busy junctions.

The county council has applied for Government funds for the improvement schemes, but will not know whether the bid has been successful until December.

If it does receive the money, it will be allocated over two years and work would be likely to start on the Powick roundabout in 2004-2005.
