A MAN who had drunk up to 20 pints of lager broke a bone in another customer's leg during a pub attack.

Steven Ridgway lashed out at Michael Binnion inside the Weary Traveller, in Sutton Road, Kidderminster.

Mr Binnion had tried to calm down an earlier altercation between two people before Ridgway "went berserk", said Abigail Nixon, prosecuting at Worcester Crown Court.

The victim was knocked to the floor and also lost a front tooth in the attack.

Ridgway, a 44-year-old contracts manager for a safety systems company, admitted causing grievous bodily harm. He was jailed for six months.

Recorder Quentin Querelle told Ridgway, of Leswell Lane, Kidderminster, he had gone over the top. He had four previous convictions for assault.

Mr Binnion was having a quiet drink on Saturday, October 11, last year when he saw a commotion and asked those responsible to stop.

Ridgway then hit him in the face six times and threatened to bite him. Mr Binnion was punched again while lying on the floor and the defendant picked up a bar stool before a customer took it off him, said Miss Nixon.

He told police he could not remember going to the pub, but he did recall grappling with a man.

Heavy drinking, which began in his Army days, was at the root of his problems, said Matthew Weaver, defending. He never got it under control.

Since the attack, he has reduced his alcohol intake because he was due to be married. His bride-to-be would not tolerate his past habit.
