WELLAND wound up their pre-season friendlies against Premiership opposition with a 2-2 draw against local rivals Upton Sports, which seemed to inspire them in their campaign for promotion against West Malvern three days later.

WELLAND ATHLETIC 2, WEST MALVERN O

With fast constructive passing football through the midfield Welland dominated the first period of play and when a long shot was handballed off the line the defender was lucky to stay on with only a warming. Ed Wray made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Welland went further ahead after 25 minutes following good movement down the right flank with Jelleyman and Derrington prominent, the latter scored.

Malvern looked more settled after the break with Lewis Wray in midfield but Scrivener excelled in the Welland goal and new signings Mark Hadley and Brendan Watson added valuable experience in defence and midfield. Tom Crump almost made it three close to the end but shot just wide.

Tomorrow (Saturday) West Malvern are at home to Plumbers Arms. Players report 2.25pm, kick-off 3pm.
