TWO councillors have been given demonstrations of temporary flood barriers before two meetings to decide on whether to implement them in the city.

Councillor Simon Geraghty and Councillor Mike Layland were unexpectedly invited to Ironbridge last Thursday for demonstrations of several types of systems.

Among them was the pallet barrier, which has been named as the preferred choice for the city, especially along Hylton Road.

Tonight, Worcester City Council's development services policy and review committee will be examining the proposed scheme, with the intention of making a recommendation to the Cabinet, which has the final say tomorrow.

The council has in the past been criticised for being slow in coming to a decision over a temporary system.

MP Mike Foster has been particularly vocal in criticising the authority, saying he "has been shocked by the amount of noise made over the issue".

Coun Geraghty said Thursday's visit was very productive.

"It wasn't a planned visit but it was certainly worthwhile," he said.

Tonight's meeting, which starts at 7pm at the Guildhall, will include more demonstrations and is open to members of the public.
