1803: Our races at Worcester concluded on Thursday last - The Match for 100 guineas in the morning, between Mr Coventry's Jenny Spinner and Mr Knudson's Arabian, was won by the former; and the £50 plate in the afternoon was won by Major Snell's St Vincent which beat Mr Coventry's Jenny Spinner. Mr Barnard's Lismahago walked over for the free plate. The spirited exertions of the Race Steward, Mr Coventry, to render the amusement in every respect satisfactory, were generally acknowledged, and his attention, politeness and affability were universally admired.

The beneficed clergy in Worcestershire have set a laudable example in offering to clothe their male servants at their own expense as Volunteers in the corps of Militia being recruited locally for the defence of their country against the renewed threat of invasion from France.

His Majesty (George III) has been pleased to accept the services of the Corps of Volunteers raised in the City of Worcester, and measures are now being taken to equip a part of them.

1903: Worcestershire County Council is advertising for a Director of Education at an annual salary of £600.

Thomas Williams (66) a sailor of Dolday, Worcester, appeared before the City Police Court and admitted begging in Copenhagen Street. Police Inspector Peacock said defendant, who was drunk, asked passers-by for a half-penny and refused to go away. Defendant said he was about to make his way to Liverpool, being a sailor with a frost-bitten leg. He was fined five shillings, a sum to be remitted if he left the city before four o'clock.

Sad as is the need for an additional mental asylum for the county and its considerable charge on the rates, the importance of the work of the new institution at Barnsley Hall called for a ceremonial stone-laying by Alderman John Bowen last Thursday. The prospective greater happiness of our mentally stricken brethren was cause for rejoicing.

1953: Take a wide view of life, especially when going to the pictures, by enjoying the new curved wide screen which has been installed at the New Salters Cinema, Droitwich. It's the first in the district, and the actual area of vision is approximately doubled.

King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark received Sir Rupert De la Bere, Lord Mayor of London and MP for South Worcestershire, on Monday last. Later, wearing full regalia and accompanied by Lady De la Bere, Sir Rupert attended a reception given by the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen.

The Abbess of Stanbrook, Dame Laurentia Margaret McLachlan, has died at the age of 87. She entered the noviciate of the English Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady of Consolation at Stanbrook, Callow End, in 1884 and was elected Abbess in 1931. She was known as a pioneer in the restoration of the Gregorian Chant in England and was the author of a number of books on mediaeval music and English Benedictine history.
