TWO goals in five minutes put paid to Malvern Town's 100 per cent record on Tuesday night when undefeated Wellington took the West Midland Premier Division points at Langland Stadium.

MALVERN TOWN 1, WELLINGTON 2

After a fairly even opening half an hour, Adam Baldwin put Town in front with a brilliantly taken goal which was sufficient to earn the home side an interval lead.

But it all went wrong for Town, when some sloppy defending during the first 15 minutes of the second period, saw Wellington snatch two goals in five minutes.

Although Town were never really at their best, they still put the visitors under considerable pressure during the second period, but clear-cut chances were few and far between.

Rik Halion fired a free kick narrowly over the bar and Dave Cannon also went close.

Efforts too, from Des Cox, Luke Willetts and Lee Hooper, all might have put Malvern back on level terms, indeed they thought they had achieved just that when in the 89th minute, the Wellington goalkeeper spilled an Adam Baldwin effort and Lee Hooper drove home the rebound, only to be ruled offside.

With a considerable amount of injury time being played, Town forced a number of corners during the game's closing moments but still could not break down the resolute Wellington rearguard.

Town general manager Richard Anson said: "It was a frustrating night as we were never really at our best, but I think we probably deserved a point from the game.

"It was also disappointing to fail in front of an excellent crowd but, if you said before the season started, that we would pick up nine points from our first four games, we would have probably settled for that."
