HUNDREDS of visitors will be descending on the village of Alfrick to enjoy a packed programme of events at this year's annual show.

The Alfrick and Lulsley Horticultural Show and Fete last year attracted between 1,000 and 1,500 visitors and a big contingent of exhibitors.

This year's event is being held on Saturday, September 6, at the cricket ground next to the village hall, and will be opened by Mike George of BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester at 1.30pm.

There will be a host of arena events, including a ceilidh band and Scottish country dancing.

The dog show, which last year attracted more than 200 entries, will run again and there will be a display of specialist and vintage vehicles.

Events for children include face painting, a bouncy castle and rides on a miniature steam locomotive.

There will also be crafts, a bar and barbecue.

Classes in the horticultural show are open to all and a particular appeal is being made for winemakers to take part.

There are six classes - sweet and dry red, sweet and dry white, rose and liqueur - with two overall cups. The judge is Patrick Shave, of the wine shop at the Hop Pocket, Bishop's Frome. Wines should be made from natural ingredients, not a kit. For details ring 01886 884372.

In the evening, the marquee will be taken over by the Fox and Hounds, which will run a pig roast and casino night. Tickets are £15 from the pub or Alfrick Post Office and proceeds will be donated to the show's organising committee.

Last year, proceeds of some £2,500 were distributed to 18 charities and village organisations.

Admission to the show is £1.50 for adults, 50p for senior citizens and children aged five to 16.
