WEST Worcestershire MP Sir Michael Spicer says he will press the case for more support for young carers.
Sir Michael met representatives of Worcestershire Young Carers at the Community First offices, at Great Malvern Station, on Wednesday.
He said the Government was publishing a Green Paper on young people later this year, focusing chiefly on child protection issues but he would lobby to have the needs of young carers included in the debate.
"I met several young carers in their early teens and I was extremely impressed by what I heard," said Sir Michael. "I'm told there are at least 1,300 young people throughout the county who are spending a tremendous amount of their time looking after sick or elderly relatives."
Sir Michael said that the pressure and physical strains on young carers often meant problems at school and that support was crucial.
