CAMPAIGNERS calling for a reduction in the speed limit on the A456 at Burford, have been shocked by yet another serious road traffic accident on the very same stretch of road .

Residents are now hoping that swift measures will be taken before more accidents happen.

Spearheading the Road Safety Action Group request for a 30mph limit, campaigner Harry Smith said: "Burford has grown considerably in recent years and to shop in Tenbury, people have to cross the busy trunk road.

"Further along the A456, the tiny community at Newnham Bridge applies a 30mph limit and we hope to persuade the county council to match it in Burford."

"The A456 Worcester Road runs straight through the village and passes alongside Northwick House, Burford Almshouses, the Community Hospital and a nearby older people's home and it is time for a reassessment. We must get something done now, before it is too late".

Backing the road safety campaign, Ludlow's Conservative parliamentary candidate, Coun Philip Dunne, is im-pressed with concerns raised by the local Road Safety Action Group.

He said: "I have written to the highways authority at Shrop-shire County Council urging them to consider reducing the speed limit. Shoppers walk into Tenbury and it really is time to calm the traffic before any more accidents happen."

Speed reductions are also being demanded by residents living alongside a notorious stretch of the A456 at Little Hereford, between the Shrop-shire border and the parish hall. The parish council, concerned over life threatening difficulties crossing the road to the church and village hall, has been pushing for changes to the speed limit for some years.

Herefordshire councillor, John Stone, told the Advertiser: "This is a dangerous stretch of road and a well known blackspot and the parish council and local residents are demanding action.

"We have had at least two attempts at reducing the speed limit to 30mph but it appears we don't meet the criteria needed for that size of reduction.

"However, at this stage, we are going for the best we can get, a 50mph limit, and subject to agreement with the county council and West Mercia Police, it could take two years to implement."
