SLIMMERS are losing pounds and Kemp Hospice is gaining them as waistlines shrink for the charity.

Eight people - members of Hartlebury's Torton Turds football club and their partners - have pledged to shed up to seven stone between them to raise at least £500 towards the campaign to raise £2.2 million for a new hospice.

It is the club's latest fund-raising idea and follows a charity golf day which raised almost £3,500 last month.

The sister of Richard Maughan, who is co-ordinating a host of events in aid of the appeal, has organised the fight against flab.

"A few of us needed to lose a few pounds and I suggested a sponsored slim and they were up for it," said Donna Phillips, 38.

"And people have stuck to it. My husband has lost 11lbs in eight weeks and I've lost eight pounds. I want a stone off and my husband wants a stone-and-a-half, and a couple of guys also want a stone-and-a-half off."

Some slimmers are being sponsored per pound while others cash in once they have reached a target.

One man has pledged to double the amount and pay it himself if he doesn't reach his goal.

"We're all feeling better for it and we're raising money at the same time," Mrs Phillips said.

She added another spin-off was the club's improved performance on the pitch.

Louise Davies, who verifies the weight loss, said a good diet was the key to their success.

The club is planning a bonfire party on November 9 and a music quiz on December 13, both at Hartlebury's British Legion club, to support the hospice appeal.
