A DETERMINED seven-year-old has helped raise £730 for Birmingham Children's Hospital to show her thanks for the work in helping her half-sister dubbed "Amazing Amy".

Casey Cornes joined family, friends and regulars of The Lakes pub, Warndon Villages, to hold a disco night.

The night included a raffle with prizes donated by a number of businesses.

The event was held two days before three-year-old Amy Lambert, who has overcome a series of threatening illnesses during her short life, set off with her dad Darren from John o' Groats to Land's End.

Travelling by lorry, they are aiming to set the record for the longest distance travelled between the two places.

Amy and her father are being followed by Amy's 26-year-old mum Laura Duffy on the expedition.

Casey has been living with her grandparents Larry and Maureen Duffy in Ronkswood, ever since Amy was diagnosed with leukaemia in December 2001.

Infection

Amy, who has two half-brothers and two half-sisters, contracted a blood infection and pneumonia shortly afterwards.

"Casey raised the money for the hospital because of what her sister has gone through," said Mr Duffy, aged 54.

"We are so proud of her for doing that."

Mrs Duffy, aged 52, said Casey had had a tough 18 months living away from her parents and Amy.

"She used to say 'I miss my mummy'," said Mrs Duffy.

"I can't believe how well she's coped."

Mrs Duffy said Amy was well on her way to recovery.

"She has an 85 per cent chance of a complete recovery and is having chemotherapy until December," she said.

Since starting the journey on Monday, they have travelled though Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester and Luton, stopping off at as many Sainsbury's stores as possible along the way, after the company decided to sponsor the fund-raising mission.

The journey is set to finish tomorrow, and they will be returning on Saturday to Sainsbury's in Blackpole, Worcester.

"At the end of the journey, we should have travelled more than 2,000 miles," said Mr Lambert, of Green Lane, Rainbow Hill, Worcester. "Amy's really enjoying it."
