WHAT a silly, silly film and what a brilliant one. Naked Gun director David Zucker has come up with a sure-fire key to belly-laughs galore in this classic lesson in zanyness.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone play two hapless 'dudes' who accidentally invent a revolutionary new sport which is a ludicrous cross between baseball and basketball. Its selling points include no burning necessity for any players to over-exert themselves but instead to psyche out the opposition in any way they please.
These schemes vary from putting on masks and using funny voices to shouting out something rude about the player's mother.
One of the first side-splitters of the whole show comes in a mock criticism of the self-congratulatory attitude found in the world of sport, when a celebrating American football side break out into a Riverdance routine.
I preferred this flavour of the outlandish and absurd to the more lavatorial and sleazy humour reminiscent of the American Pie movies. It if hadn't been for this dip in taste, a full five stars would have been gven.
On the other hand, if my teenagers had been asked, they would have preferred more of the latter.
