WORCESTER'S Simon Jones and Mark Atkins battled their way into the last 16 of the National Express Men's All England Bowls Pairs at Worthing last night.
Jones and Atkins scored eight shots over four successful ends to leap 11-5 ahead against Wellingborough's Neil Rees and Paul Broderick after 10 ends of their second round clash.
Back came the opposition with a double, but two doubles over three ends saw Jones and Atkins stretch their advantage to 15-8.
A fighting finish by Rees and Broderick enabled them to carry a 19-18 lead into the last end, but Jones and Atkins edged through 20-19.
Earlier, the Worcester men opened their campaign with a decisive 17-13 victory over Banbury and Central's Mark Sykes and John Tee in the first round.
Meanwhile, the Worcestershire rink of Marc Stones, Steve Parker, Grant Burgess (Gilt Edge) and Worcester's Rob Stanley were edged out 18-17 by a Walton, Yorkshire, in the National County top four championship at the weekend.
