IT'S encouraging to see the decision-makers at University College Worcester taking sensible steps to improve personal safety on the Henwick Road campus.

Patrols will be doubled and CCTV cameras installed to combat what UCW refers to as "inadequate security".

The moves come after a rise in thefts from cars last winter and a joint student union-police survey which highlighted concerns about hazardous parts of the site.

We're especially pleased that the principles of safety and peace of mind are deemed important by the students themselves.

It would be wrong to tar everyone there with the same brush, but there'll be more than a handful of residents living in the St John's streets leading to and from the campus who'll be thinking the new moves are a bit rich.

They're the people whose lives have been blighted by unruly and anti-social behaviour laid at the door - with some justification - of UCW revellers.

We'd be surprised if those residents haven't looked at the new proposals and felt that a new late-night bus service to and from the campus is something less than required.

Students are already drifting back to Henwick Road.

If there's one message which ought to echo clearly, at tonight's open meeting to discuss the measures, it's that a repeat of the dreadful behaviour will not be tolerated.

A new bus service is a start. But we're looking for more before we're ready to say that UCW, the city and the police have done enough for these people.
