RESIDENTS fear that a serious accident is waiting to happen on a "nasty" corner of a St John's road.

Pensioners Jean and Eric Hook, live in Fern Road on the corner of the chicane-like bend where it joins Comer Gardens.

They are demanding that the city council do something to slow down the traffic.

"The corner is a danger to anyone who is around there," said Mrs Hook.

"Cars just race down the road and we need something to slow them down.

"It's just a wonder that no one has been killed - it really is a nasty corner."

Mrs Hook said warning signs are needed to let drivers know how tight the bend really is.

"We have been more concerned since we had our wall knocked down last year, and when you have grandchildren you realise what could happen."

Bill Kimberley has lived in Fern Road since 1973 and said: "It's gone from a quiet road to a dangerous road".

"I have had my wall smashed twice and once a car even smashed into my kitchen," said the 61-year-old.

"It's quite horrendous at the speed some idiots drive through here."

The city councillors for the St Clement's ward, Simon Geraghty, Colin Phillips and Barry Mackenzie-Williams, all support the residents.

Coun Geraghty lives on Comer Gardens and is fully aware of the problem.

"I would say that it's a particularly difficult bend and any traffic that speeds along there is going to possible cause a dangerous situation.

"All the residents are asking for better signage and better warnings about how tight the bend is," said Coun Geraghty.

Tom Comerford, the city council's senior engineer for traffic management, said it was considering what options were available.

"We may introduce black-on-white hazard boards or a warning sign for the bend," said Mr Comerford.

"But we have to make sure that we spend funds in areas that have existing problems and I'm not aware of any specific accident problems on that road."
