CITY council leaders have welcomed news that an extra 30 police officers will be heading to the South Worcestershire division to help combat crime.

The news was announced last week, with the number of officers working in West Mercia reaching a record high of 2,400.

Top-ranking officers from Worcester police station met councillors at the Guildhall to brief them on crime figures and performance.

Councillors also had the opportunity to quiz officers on a range of community safety issues.

"We managed to cover a terrific amount of ground in respect of police priorities, crime trends and performance," said Labour group leader, Adrian Gregson, who chaired the meeting.

"In terms of forging a greater awareness and understanding of what we're both hoping to achieve from the Community Safety Partnership, the meeting proved extremely useful and a number of wide-ranging issues emerged from it - all of which are worthy of our full support."
