BROADWAY'S Sue Davis saw her tremendous bid to win the National Express All-England Two-Wood singles title foiled in the final by Kent's Ann Dennis at Royal Leamington Spa yesterday.

Davis led 6-5 after nine ends, but Dennis hit back to lead 11-9 and then summoned up a powerful finish, scoring four shots over three successive ends to win 15-9.

Davis started the day's action with a 14-9 victory over Julie Saunders from Bournemouth.

The players were locked together at 9-9 in their quarter-final clash before Davis swooped with two singles, a double and a single to romp home 14-9.

Davis raced into a 10-4 lead against Cambridge's Kathy Fraser in the semi-finals, but Fraser battled back to draw level at 12-12.

Then Davis pounced with two doubles to win the battle 16-12.

Meanwhile Davis' Broadway club mate Viv Hall saw her title hopes crash in the quarter finals when she was defeated 17-6 by Bedfordshire's Jan Bradley.

The title challenge of Val Pedlingham's Eastnor team was stopped in the quarter finals -- but only after a tremendous battle with Englands skip Dorreen Hankin's team from Egham Surrey.

Pedlingham was on the brink of victory with a 20-18 lead, only to see Hankin snatch a last gasp treble to edge her out 21-20.

Earlier Pedlingham and her club mates Toby Bennett, Val Brookes and Joan Jones saw off Lilian Holliday's Berkshire team 21-16 in the third round.
