CATHY Harris retained her Worcestershire Golf Club Ladies Championship title after a tense battle with former county player Pat Catlin.

On Ladies' Club Championship day, six different competitions were run concurrently. With scores needing to be carefully checked and evaluated, Sandra Schofield, the competitions secretary, was kept extremely busy.

In the Club Championship, played over 36 holes, Pat Catlin was in excellent form in the morning round and returned a gross score of 79. In the afternoon round Pat faltered but still returned the creditable score of 85, giving her a total of 164.

Pat's afternoon score allowed last year's champion Cathy Harris to make inroads into her lead. Cathy, who came in with an 83 in the morning, played some superb golf in the afternoon, in poor conditions, to shoot an 81, giving her the same 164 total.

Former hockey international Cathy, who is now a sports correspondent for The Times, retained her title having a much better last 18-hole score.

Pat Catlin was rewarded however by winning the Silver Scratch Cup with the best round of the day, her 79 in the morning round. Barbara Wilkinson won The Bronze Scratch Cup with 95. Fey Recordon was runner up with 97.

In the Extra Medal Competition, the Silver Division was won by Pat Catlin with a net 68. Up-and-coming golfer Janet Long was the runner up with a net par 71.

In the Bronze Division the experienced lady golfers were unable to compete with the form of 12-year-old Vicky Lane. Young Vicky was in superb form and returned a net 64, seven strokes below par, to win the division by five clear shots. Barbara Wilkinson was runner up with a net score of 69.

In the Net Eclectic competition, played over 36 holes, Barbara Wilkinson proved too strong for the rest of the field returning a score of 63. Young Joanna Yorke was the runner up with 65.

- In the absence of their team captain, Nick Smith, the club's scratch league team performed a whitewash against The Vale Golf Club in the Worcestershire Bowl Scratch League match with a 5-0 victory.

Three players, Phil Dance, Lawrence Knutson and Steven Lane, won their matches by the large margin of six up with five to play. Paul Yorke won his encounter, four and two, while Matt Pugh won his much closer fought game, two and one.
