BROADWAY Club mates Viv Hall and Sue Davies stormed into the quarter-finals of National Express Women's All England Two-Wood Singles Championship at Royal Leamington Spa last night.
Hall opened her campaign in brilliant style, rocketing into a 16-0 lead over the first eight ends against Debbie Stavrou from Hove, Sussex. She stayed firmly in the driving seat to romp home 16-4.
In the second round Hall built up a 10-4 lead over Cornwall's Sue Roach and although Roach hit back to slash the gap to 10-9. Hall kept her cool, adding five singles on the run-in to win 15-10.
Hall stayed in the winning groove in her last 16 clash with Bedfordshire's Janet Roffe.
The players were locked together at 10-10, then Hall swooped with three doubles and a single to charge to victory 17-10.
In today's quarter-finals Hall takes on Bedfordshire's Jan Bradley.
Meanwhile Davies was involved in a close first round clash with Lincolnshire's Kathleen Scatliffe. The players were all square at 6-6 and Davies edged ahead 11-10 after 17 ends, adding a double, only to see Scatliffe rally with 2 singles to reduce the deficit to 13-12.
However Davies landed the knockout blow on the final end, edging through 14-12.
Davies was embroiled in another close encounter against Cumbria's Carol Haney in round two. Haney led 12-11, but Davies summoned up a fighting finish, noticing a double and two singles over the next four ends to win 15-13.
Once again Davies had to fight for success as she chased a place in the last eight. She led 11-7 against Banbury's Mo Cox, but her rival charged back to inch ahead 13-12 with two ends to play.
Davies produced a double and a single when it matter most to inch home 15-13 and meets Bournemouth's Julie Saunders in today's quarter-finals.
Leominster's Tracey Powell lost 17-4 to Sue Springell in the preliminary round, while Bulmer's player Eleanor Knight went down 18-4.
