CHRISTMAS carols in Malvern will have a local feel this year.

Town churches have signed up to perform the winning entry in a carol-writing competition.

Lyricists are being encouraged to get enter the contest, being organised by Churches Together in Malvern.

There are three categories - primary schoolchildren, secondary schoolchildren and adults - and winning entries will be performed by choirs this Yuletide.

The piece should tell all or part of the Christmas story while making it relevant to the modern world. The words must be English but set to the traditional Welsh folk tune Suo-Gan.

Broadcaster and hymn writer John Bell, from the Iona Community, will choose the best from each category as well as an overall winner. Entry forms, music and rules are available from church secretaries or on 01684 562692 and 01684 573002. The closing date is September 30.
