TO see families re-united on the quayside at Portsmouth on Monday underlines the fact that wars are fought not by armies and navies but by people.

The experience of HMS Ledbury's crew over the last few months is likely to be a life changing one and what they have seen and been through will always remain with them.

The danger they faced working in a minefield close to a hostile shore should not be underestimated and nor should the professionalism they showed in meeting their challenge.

Now the refit will give the crew a chance to enjoy a piece of normal life, which they deserve to enjoy to the full.

Looking ahead, the visit to Ledbury by the officers and crew promises to be a unique occasion in the life of the town.

There is a genuine desire on board ship to get to know Ledbury and to meet the people who have shown the crew such warm support.

On the town's side too, arrangements are being made for a truly special few days and Ledbury Town Council is to be commended for the effort it has made in forging and maintaining this link.

The wider Ledbury population can play its part by turning out in force to cheer the crew as they march through town, or as they struggle (!) in a match against the town's talented rugby players.

The crew of HMS Ledbury have given a lot over the last few months, the town has the chance to give them a different experience to remember for the rest of their lives.
