ABOUT 30 people gathered for the annual Malvern vigil which marks the dropping of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs.

Among those remembering the devastation, which occurred on August 6 and 9, 1945, were Japanese tourists Harumi Hayashi and Toshiko Tanaka, who were visiting the town from their home in Tokyo.

Wooden crosses bearing the names of towns and cities blighted by nuclear incidents and testing were placed at the foot of the peace tree in Great Malvern Priory on Saturday.

The Rev Alan Williams, new priest in charge at the Church of the Ascension and St Peter's Church, in Cowleigh, led the vigil.

Messages of peace and goodwill were written on paper cranes which will be sent to a peace park in Hiroshima.

The vigil was followed by a short service in Priory Church led by the Rev Ant Pettit, curate at the Priory.
