IT was a red letter day for one Malvern postman on Wednesday when he retired after 38 years covering the same patch.

Even getting shot during a 1994 raid at Malvern Link Post Office couldn't stop Tony Beale rising bright and early for his round. " It was serious. If I hadn't been a little fatty I would have been no more," said Tony.

Despite being forced to spend a fortnight in hospital, Tony never thought of giving up the job he loved.

Residents on his round in Little Malvern and Upper Welland paid tribute to his efforts.

"He's brilliant," said friend Frank Whatley. "Very, very helpful, you couldn't have a better bloke."

Jane Brimmell, aged 75, who is blind, said Tony was always happy to offer a helping hand. "He's more of a friend than a postman and I hope he has a happy retirement," she said.
