Two West Malvern residents are planning to cycle 370 miles across Cambodia in November to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Diana Walker and Roger Morgan, with their friends Lyn and Dave Derrett, from Powick, recently raised more than £1,500 from a successful barn dance held at Robert and Gladys Floyd's farm. They are grateful to all local residents for their support.

This will be a first Macmillan Cycling Challenge for Dave, a second for Roger, who with Diana participated in the Ecuador Challenge in 2001, and a third for Diana herself, who previously took part in a similar event in Mexico in 1999. The six-day ride by a group of about 60 people from Sihanoukville to the famous Royal Temples of Angkor Wat is likely to mean braving heat, insects, dusty pot-holed roads and rough camping - usually with just a river to wash in.

All the money the three locals raise will be donated to local funds to establish a Macmillan Gynaecology nurse at Worcester Royal Hospital to support women with cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancers, and a Macmillan Lymphoedema nurse serving the south of the county who will specialise in treating this incurable side-effect of some cancer treatments. Anyone interested in supporting this venture can contact Diana Walker on 01684 567882.

A further fundraising event will take place on Saturday when a local group will attend an open air concert with fireworks in Charlecote Park, a National Trust property near Stratford-upon-Avon. There are still a couple of places available with transport and optional supper included. If interested, ring the above number.
