PEOPLE who open their windows in a bid to cool down during the hot summer weather could be making their homes a burglary hotspot.

West Mercia Police are warning the public to ensure their windows and doors are secure following a spate of thefts.

"In the current hot weather, it's very tempting to leave windows open but this will make your property a target for the opportune burglar," said a police spokesman.

"We advise people to double-check their security arrangements to avoid becoming a victim.

"We would also remind householders to consider their home security when leaving their houses unattended when they go on holiday."

Police are urging use of alarms and timed light switches as well as asking neighbours to keep a general eye on things.

"Remember to remove post and newspapers and to make sure garden sheds are also secure," said the spokesman.
