IN response to the letter from Dave Stanton regarding the city council recycling sacks (You Say, July 31), I would like to reassure residents that sacks should be tied when placed out for collection.
The Guide to Recycling leaflet that was included in the starter packs states: "Sacks should be tied up to avoid spillages". We ask all residents to tie the sacks to prevent litter problems and to keep the contents dry.
Sacks are collected by recycling crews, placed into the vehicle and unloaded at the sorting facility at Hill & Moor.
At no time are they cut or untied by city council staff.
When they have been emptied at the sorting facility, the sacks are separated by colour, and made up into bales of plastic.
It is at this point that they are sent for re-use at a plastic reprocessing plant.
Residents with queries can contact the Kerbside Recycling helpline on 01905 722465.
